With its low-hipped main roof and dormers, broad verandah with arched spandrels, and wood shingle cladding, it’s difficult to imagine that this neat, pleasingly balanced cottage-like residence once caused controversy.

This Craftsman-inspired 1 and half storey is reportedly the first “bungalow” built in Fredericton (located at 337 University Avenue), and is said to have tempted City officials to balk at its approval. This notoriety and the unusual design generated a stream of curious onlookers during and after its construction circa 1906 by Thomas Allen for insurance agent C.J. Mersereau.
