Elizabeth MacDonald was born on February 17, 1864, in Westcock, near Sackville. She received her education at the Collegiate School and the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton.
A talented poet, Elizabeth MacDonald had her work published in several notable literary journals, including The Century, The Independent, and Outing Magazine. Early in her career, she taught at the School for the Blind in Halifax but left the position in 1896 after marrying her cousin, Samuel Archibald Roberts MacDonald.
Her literary talents were recognized early on—her father privately published a collection of her poems in Poems (1885), and her brother Charles G.D. Roberts helped promote her work by submitting it to “Songs of the Great Dominion” (1889) and including it in the family anthology “Northland Lyrics” (1899).
In 1904, she published a children’s book titled “Our Little Canadian Cousin”. Her second collection of poetry, “Dream Verses and Others”, followed in 1906. She also contributed short stories to “New York Churchman” and “Peterson’s Magazine”.
In 1912, the Elizabeth MacDonald family relocated from Fredericton to Nelson, British Columbia, and then to Winnipeg, Manitoba, two years later. After her marriage ended in 1915, Jane moved with her sons to Ottawa, where she lived until her death in 1922.
