Built in 1866, the Isaac Newton House is an impressive example of twin Gothic Revival architecture, with a one-and-a-half storey design that is located off the western side of Route 776 on Grand Manan Island. Its gabled roof, steeply-pitched twin dormers, and ornamental gingerbread trim are just some of the striking details visible from the road.
Notably, the Isaac Newton House has been designated a Local Historic Place due to its distinctive architectural style and its association with Isaac Newton, a prominent resident of Grand Manan Island. The Newton family occupied the residence until Grace Newton, the last remaining family member, passed away in 1970.
Isaac Newton was a successful and ambitious man whose accomplishments had a significant impact on the social and economic progress of Grand Manan. He was the island’s first Federal Customs Officer and one of the first two representatives of the municipal legislature.
Additionally, he was a highly successful fisherman and the owner of a profitable general store nearby. Newton was also instrumental in the creation of the Dark Harbour Telephone Company and played a key role in forming and managing the Grand Manan Steamship Company, which provided the island’s first regular, year-round ferry service.

Beautiful house. Too bad there’s no pictures of the interior. Also love the store. Next time I’m in New Brunswick I’m going to make a point of visiting Grand Manan Island.
