In the town of Hampton in southern New Brunswick, there’s a house that is unlike any other. It was called the “Bride’s house” and was shrouded in local legend.
The story goes that a wealthy family of boat builders had a youngest daughter who fell in love with a young pastor of modest means. Despite their economic differences, the couple was deeply in love and wished to get married. The bride’s brothers, being devoted to their sister, wanted to give her the best wedding gift they could. They decided to construct a house for the newlyweds, which would later be known as the Bride’s house.
To keep the construction a secret, the brothers built a large barn near the river’s edge, similar to how they would build a boat. However, inside the barn, they constructed the charming house with pointed doors and windows like a church, rooms of odd shapes and sizes, and a spectacular eight-sided main bedroom with a vaulted, conical ceiling. It was indeed a grand gift.
On the day of the wedding, the newlyweds were brought to the site, and the surrounding walls of the barn were torn down, revealing the lovely house. The bride was overjoyed, and the couple moved into their new home, which became the talk of the town. People came from far and wide to marvel at the unique and stunningly beautiful Bride’s house.
Over time, the house became a symbol of love and devotion in the town of Hampton. It was said that the love between the couple who lived there was so strong that it infused the very walls of the house, making it a place of happiness and warmth.
To this day, the Bride’s house remains a beloved landmark in the town of Hampton. Visitors can still admire its unique design and hear the story of how it came to be. And for those who believe in the power of love, it is a reminder that true love can conquer all, even economic differences.
