Restrained Queen Anne Revival detail belies the surprisingly late construction date of 1928 for this house built for the George T. Whelpley family (located at 24 Waterloo Row in Fredericton).
During the residency of local historian Louise Hill, this dwelling was known as “the coffee pot” on account of its curved corner turret. Many of the windows (including the distinct circular porch window and the downriver façade “piano” windows) feature striking beveled and patterned glass patterns. Of note is the interior stair landing’s Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired stained glass window, unique in the City. Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired stained glass, or “lightscreens,” revolutionized interior design by treating windows as integral, artistic elements of organic architecture rather than just openings for light. primarily developed between 1890 and 1910, these geometric, nature-inspired designs used clear and iridescent glass to connect indoors with nature while ensuring privacy.
