Lawrence McCloskey was a notable figure born in 1895 in Boiestown. A severe maritime winter in 1917 may have inspired him to patent the thermal windowpane. His design featured two glass panes separated by a thin hollow space. While this alone provided limited additional insulation, the innovative aspect was the hermetically sealed alcohol-filled space between the panes. This created an airtight barrier, significantly improving insulation and comfort by preventing the passage of air.
The McCloskey family has deep roots in Boiestown, dating back to Patrick McCloskey, who emigrated from Ireland at the age of 13 in the early 19th century. The family established McCloskey’s General Store, which became a central part of the community. Today, the store remains operational, offering a unique shopping experience that has been maintained through generations.
